Separation/Divorce

Therapy in Chester and all of NJ

Is it really over? I am so lonely.

Help me with my anger and sadness.

What do I tell the kids?

Am I really capable of being on my own?

When should I start dating? Do I even want to?

Going through a separation or divorce is one of the most traumatic events that you will ever experience. Whether the separation or divorce is a mutual decision or one partner chooses to leave, it can be difficult to see the future as bright and promising.

You probably have a bunch of unanswered questions ranging from legal, financial and emotional concerns. You may be getting unsolicited advice from family and friends. You may not know who to go to or who to trust. Your thoughts and feelings probably change from one day to the next. You are not alone if you are feeling:

    • deeply confused about what to do next
    • depressed, anxious, angry or fearful
    • guilty about the breakup especially if you have kids
    • insecure about the future

What Month Do Most Divorces Occur?

August not only spells out the end of summer but it could also spell out the end of marriage! Believe it or not, August is the month that most divorces occur. Most couples believe that summer is the time to restart their marriage and come together as a family. After the long cold winter months, couples believe that summer is an opportunity to "pick up the pieces." Many people find that summer is a relaxed pace filled with vacations and more time spent with one another. Plus, there are more activities to do and plan for the summer!

Co-Parenting With Your Ex

Parenting is a roller coaster from the very beginning. No matter how many books we read, gear we buy, or words of wisdom we gather, the moment a baby is born there is another person at the helm of our lives. It takes a village to raise a child, and thankfully some of us have at least a few trusted supporters to help us out. We generally idealize a two-parent system where couples set-up a family together to divide and conquer parenting tasks. This process is already challenging enough, so what happens when the parenting couple itself divides...

Dating After Divorce

A perk of marriage: you no longer have to date! A perk of divorce: you get to date! Hmm...how can that be? But it’s true. Divorce is typically not in the plan, which of course can throw you for a loop. While the thought of dating after divorce can be terrifying and confusing (how on earth do I do this?!), it can also be such an exciting new chapter of your life.

Not Sure What To Tell The Kids?

"If you are preparing to tell your children about your upcoming divorce, you might have a million questions flying through your head. How will my relationship issues affect my kids? What do I even say, or not say? ..."

I too, felt like this 20 years ago when I went through a divorce and I never thought my life would turn around. It took time, energy and the help of a great therapist to get me through one of the most difficult times of my life.

I highly recommend separation counseling when you initially separate and divorce counseling when you start the legal process.  It is also helpful to get individual counseling after divorce and/or family therapy after divorce especially if you have children.  Eventually, I was able to see this life transition as an opportunity for growth which inspired me to go to graduate school to get my Masters Degree in Social Work. Now, I am able to give back to you what  learned both personally and professionally.

It wasn't easy but if I can do it, you can too!

My clients have told me that I provided them with a safe, encouraging and empowering experience during this difficult time. I will do the same for you. I can help you learn how to:

    • cope with feelings of loss, anger, sadness and loneliness
    • rebuild self-esteem and restore hope
    • communicate better with your ex-spouse concerning co-parenting, visitation, financial matters etc.
    • be single again, date and set new goals for yourself

I will answer all your unanswered questions as best as I can and if necessary  I will refer you to other resources in the community that you may need.
I look forward to helping you process your emotions and move forward in a healthy and constructive way.
